Spring Cleaning: 8 Tips to Make This Year Easier
spring cleaning

We’ve enjoyed our “cool” winter here in McAllen, but now spring is here, and you haven’t already guessed it—spring cleaning! While it isn’t the most exciting thing in the world to do, a little spring cleaning can go a long way in making your apartment feel so much fresher and renewed.

Don’t worry. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to take up the entire day, and with these tips, you’ll get things done quicker and better. Whether or not you call the luxurious Villa Regale Apartments your home, giving your apartment a spring cleaning will give it a wonderful facelift

1. Prepare

Before a good spring cleaning, you’ll want to prepare all the necessary tools you will need to handle the job. This list shouldn’t be expensive and you should be able to find all these items at your local market:

Sponges or microfiber cloths
Vacuum with attachments
Rubber gloves
Broom
Mop
All-purpose cleaner (i.e. Lysol)
Bathroom cleaner (i.e. Clorox wipes)

2. De-clutter

Sad, we know, but sometimes you have to get rid of things you don’t use or need—even if they have sentimental value. To make things easier, you can categorize items into boxes or bags as trash, store, or sell/give away.  Just make sure you are getting rid of all those unnecessary items you don’t use (not everything should be going in the “store” box).

3. Starting Point

Now that things have been organized a bit, you’ll want to start with dusting and cleaning windows. Make sure to clean ceiling fans, light bulbs and fixtures, pictures and art, and anything else that’s been gathering a little (or a lot) of dust. The reason you want to do this first is because some of that flying dust is going to get on your floor and you don’t want to have to clean it twice.

4. Take it Slow

Rome wasn’t built in a day and spring cleaning doesn’t have to be done in one day either. Regardless of how big your apartment really is, it can be a bit frustrating to try and get to all that cleaning in one go. Instead, do one room/area at a time. You can even break it down into a couple of days during the week to make things more manageable.

5. Don’t Forget Those Curtains and Carpets

You might not realize it, but your curtains and carpets have probably soaked up quite a bit of dirt in their time. That’s why you’ll want to do a good thorough cleaning of both, which can also help to relieve some allergies for those of you who suffer from those pesky seasonal colds.

Check the labels on your curtains, and if everything looks good to go, toss them in the washer or get them dry cleaned.

A basic vacuuming of your rugs and carpets will help to pick up that top layer of dirt. But if you REALLY want them clean, consider renting a carpet cleaner from one of your big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes (HEB also rents that out locally in McAllen). You’ll probably need to purchase a cleaning solution to go with it but believe us, the results are worth the effort.

6. Before You Clean the Kitchen and Bathroom…

When you start sterilizing your kitchen sink, bathroom shower, and tub, you will want to use a quality cleaning solution. But instead of spraying and scrubbing right away, give the solution a bit of time to soak in. Giving the cleaner a solid 10 minutes to soak will help to tackle grime and stains, plus make it easier for you to scrub away.

While you are waiting for the solution to kick in, throw that used sponge into the microwave for about one minute. Chances are you’ve probably already used that sponge and germs and bacteria are already on it. You don’t want to spread them around your apartment.

Microwaving the sponge will help to get rid of those germs, so you can feel comfortable using it another round. Of course, if the sponge is tattered and falling apart, it’s probably better just to get a new one.

7. Speaking of the Kitchen

Don’t forget to clean out your refrigerator and freezer. You might be good at getting rid of leftovers from two days ago, but when’s the last time you checked the back of your fridge? Get rid of those old and moldy vegetables in the bottom drawers. Consider taking everything out of the fridge and giving it a thorough cleansing before placing everything back in—you don’t want that old jello sprouting legs!

8. Simple and Safe

It’s easy to overlook this final tip, but replacing the batteries in your smoke detector can help to save your life. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to switch them out because you’re already in the process of changing things around. Pop in some new batteries and keep your apartment safe.
