10 Tips For Taking Care of Your Precious Pooch When Living in an Apartment

If we know dog owners (and we do), then we’re confident that you want your pup to live in luxury just like you. Villa Regale in North McAllen offers just this—a stunning and luxurious environment for you and your dog.

While you might have heard that apartment life isn’t for dogs, that’s far from the truth, especially at Villa Regale. Our prime location in North McAllen means easy access to great parks and walking trails, and your cuddly canine companion is guaranteed to have a blast and enjoy the experience as much as you.

It is important to remember though that keeping a dog in your apartment does indeed mean that you have to invest a little bit more time, energy, and creativity into providing them with a comfortable environment. But with our simple tips on how to care for your precious pooch when living in an apartment, your furry roommate will be healthy and happy.

1. Consider what floor you’ll be living on. Living on the first floor of your building can make it easier to have access to the outdoors and make potty trips easier. Stairs can be a challenge for aging dogs and pups, making trips outside a little more time consuming and troublesome. Your living situation can be an easy thing to overlook when caring for your pooch, but it can make things simpler for you (or harder).

2. Exercise. Exercise. Exercise. Besides just food and love, your four-legged friend is also going to need to get some exercise to stay healthy. Apartments don’t give your pets the freedom of an open yard, which can cause them to be a little destructive. Make sure that you get your dog outside for walks at least 2–3 times a day. Length of time spent will vary depending on your pet’s energy levels. Take them for walks, play fetch, let them socialize with other dogs, take runs together, and if possible, aim for off-leash exercise every day too. Plus, it’s also a great way to get outside for some sun and exercise yourself.

3. Don’t forget those toys. Dogs love to chew, and without a ton of space, they might convert that energy into destruction. You’ll want to have a basket full of toys that they can access at any time, with all different kinds of chews, ropes, and bones. The more your dog has, the less likely you’ll come home to a half-eaten shoe and torn up pillow.

4. Create comfort by following a routine. Establish a daily routine of taking walks, feeding your fur baby, waking up, napping, playing, and going to bed. This sort of familiarity helps to create comfort for your pup and will make transitioning into a new apartment much easier for you and them.

5. Situate food and water in calm areas. Dogs can act aggressively or fearful when eating and drinking, so you will want to place their necessities in a quiet area of the apartment that doesn’t see a lot of foot traffic and noise. Placing their food in a comfortable area will help to keep them at ease and eating properly—a distractful or loud area can prove to be too much for a little pup.

6. Dogs shed, so brush them daily. Most dogs will shed fur, and depending on the breed, it might become excessive. Failing to brush them frequently will mean clumps of fur on your furniture, apartment floor, and even your walls. Brush them daily to help them with the process of shedding without turning your apartment into a fur-covered home.

7. If possible, stay connected. Are you able to come home for lunch? Well, consider spending a few minutes stopping by your apartment to check in on your dog. If your work schedule is hectic, then ask a friend or family member who has some free time to play with your pet for a few minutes. This can help them from becoming lonely and stressed in your apartment (and from turning that restlessness into a chewing frenzy).

8. Keep them quiet. Unfortunately, dogs bark, and living in an apartment isn’t always conducive to this behavior. If you want to avoid angry neighbors, you’ll have to try and keep them silent while you’re away. As previously mentioned, lots of exercise and toys will help your dog burn off energy and ward off loneliness, but you can also consider crate-training as well. Just make sure to put the crate in a cool and comfortable area.

9. The world outside. You can consider opening the blinds when you’re home. This can help to keep your dog from becoming bored and will let them see what’s going on outside. Plus, they might enjoy the warmth of the sunshine coming in and a nice nap.

10. A place to call home. Your canine companion is going to want some space of their own. This means you have to be aware of your space and furniture. Keep furniture as close to the wall as possible, mount your television, and leave open pathways throughout the house so they can get around. Also, consider placing their bed in a corner nook so it isn’t just out in the open taking up space.
