4 Summer Moving Tips to Stay Cool

Weather in the Rio Grande Valley can be pretty hot to say the least. If you’re already a Valley resident, you know that embarking on a move in the summer months is no easy feat. Or if you’re new to the area, just be aware that summers in the McAllen metro area call for lots of ice cold water, frozen treats, and air conditioning.

When you’re making the move to a new place this summer, you’ll want to take care of yourself and your personal items from the summer heat. Check out these tips to make your summer move easier and more comfortable.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Staying hydrated may seem like a no-brainer, but with all the commotion of packing and unpacking, you might forget to have some water constantly on hand. Consider that you’ll be expending plenty of energy by lifting, bending, carrying, and doing all sorts of physical activity while you move. Add to that a good amount of sweat from being exposed to that South Texas heat and dehydration can easily occur. Make sure to carry bottles of water with you to replenish your electrolytes and stay hydrated throughout your move.

Get Covered and Stay Covered

Forget flip flops, tight yoga pants, or heavy jerseys. It’s best to avoid those dark and heavy materials that will make you sweat more, as well as those uncomfortable shoes that can cause an accident or leave your feet sore after a hard day’s work. Instead, wear comfortable, lightweight and breathable clothing while you’re moving. If you plan to spend a decent amount of time in the sun, loose and long cotton materials are best to protect your skin from too much sun exposure. Don’t skimp on your sunscreen! Opt for a sunblock with an SPF of 50 and be sure to reapply as needed.

Blast the Air Con

Heat stroke is a very real thing in the Rio Grande Valley. Moving to a new home requires plenty of outdoor activity and the combination of high temperatures with high humidity means one needs to be extra cautious about time spent outdoors. Whatever moments you spend indoors while you’re moving will be made better if they’re spent in a cool place. So, to stay out of the muggy and hot weather while you’re unpacking, make sure to crank up the air conditioning in the apartment you’re moving into. You’ll stay refreshed in between bouts of strenuous activity!

Be Aware of Perishable Items

If you scheduled a moving truck to help you transport your personal items to a new apartment during the middle of the day, you can bet that your items will be exposed to excessive heat. Be mindful of things like candles, beauty and skin care products, food, cleaning products, and anything that can spoil in prolonged, extreme heat. You should pack these things in your own vehicle to ensure quick transport.
